It prides itself on being the best indian in town but the urban tandoor is not your traditional curry house complete with flock wallpaper and glass-topped tables. And the ultra-modern approach to indian cuisine appears to have paid off.
The restaurant in the centre of bristol has been named as being in the top five indians in the country by the people that matter the most – the customers. Internet site tripadvisor has published a list of the best curry houses in the country according to raters from its users.

It is no secret that the UK loves its curries. Indian cuisine has thrived here for many years, which makes sense, considering how delicious it is. Of course, some curries get a little more attention than others and are ordered time and time again from curry houses. The chances are your regular order will be on this list of the five most popular Indian curries in the UK! 1. Korma Some people think of only intense spice when they think about Indian food, but the humble korma shows that curries don’t have to water the eyes to please a crowd! The korma is known for its absence of heat and lovely creaminess, as it’s made with braised meat/vegetables, almonds, and a yoghurt or cream sauce. In terms of spices, korma is usually brought to life with saffron and cardamom. Many people love a korma because it’s mild, sweet, and creamy – people who are only comfortable with a very low heat level will enjoy it, although you can turn the heat up by adding more spice if that suits your tastebuds more. 2. Tikka Masala Next is the lovely tikka masala. While sources are varied, many say this mild but tasty dish originated in the UK (specifically Glasgow) after South Asian influence! This one undoubtedly has many of the UK’s preferences when it comes to Indian food – it’s creamy yet still spiced. It consists of boneless meat (or vegetables/paneer) with spices and yoghurt, which creates a brown/red sauce. 3. Madras Madras is a mouth-watering spicy curry, with its name originating from the city of Madras in India (although this city is now known as Chennai). This brown curry is created with a heavy hand of chilli powder, giving a bit more of a kick to whoever orders this one. As such, it’s favoured by the Brits, that can handle more spice! 4. Jalfrezi The word Jalfrezi literally means “hot fry”, and that refers to how this delicious dish is made. The vegetables consist of onions, peppers, and tomatoes, which all get stir-fried with meat or a vegetable alternative (often chicken, lamb, vegetables, or paneer). The deeper, more savoury tastes in this dish come from the fenugreek and cumin, creating a deep, tasty, mouth-watering curry that UK households love to order. 5. Vindaloo Last (but not least), there’s the vindaloo, a dish that translates to vinegar and potato (vin and aloo). This tangy Indian dish originated in Goa but has a lot of Portuguese influence. The blend of warm spices and the tanginess of the vinegar gives this dish a unique flavour, and often curry houses will add a lot of spice to provide more intensity. It’s a very hot dish that only those who can withstand fierce spice will order – but with those people, it’s their absolute favourite! Indulge in Delicious Curries Made from the Finest Ingredients No matter what your regular order is – whether you’re always happy with a jalfrezi or prefer picking something interesting from the chef’s specials – book a table at our Indian restaurant in Bristol and Clifton. Each of our dishes provides a mouth-watering experience thanks to our chef’s expertise and our use of fresh, quality ingredients. The British Curry Awards saw Bristol favourite Urban Tandoor take home a special new prize. Dubbed the 'Curry Oscars', the event saw the restaurant - which has a site on Whiteladies Road and Small Street - shortlisted for the Best in the South West category alongside The Mint Room. It was Prithvi Restaurant in Cheltenham that took the regional title at the London ceremony on Monday night (November 28) as voted for by the public, but Urban Tandoor didn't leave the capital empty-handed, winning in a brand new category. The Clifton curry house, popular for its colourful decor and flower wall alongside its menu, was in the Diners' Choice Award, recognising the restaurant's efforts in engaging audiences on social media. Any nominated establishment in Britain had a chance to win this award based on the highest number of live, public votes on the night. Urban Tandoor has taken Tiktok by storm this year with its most popular video attaining almost 3.5 million views. The restaurant has 30,000 followers and has earned well over one million likes across its videos. People kept voting until the end at 10pm, when they closed the line. It was time for us to come back and I said 'I don't think we're winning anything let's make a move' and that's when they announced it. "When you see the big names there you already give up. I didn't think we were in that category, we are okay in Bristol but not in the UK. It was good to be recognised all over the UK for a different twist." Read more...
